Harry Potter and the Cursed Child: A Rant

Hey bookworms!
The majority of the world would consider themselves Harry Potter fans and I, myself, am one of those people.
I grew up loving the series too death and being a little too obsessed with it. I desperately wanted to be transported into this magical world and be friends with most of the characters. It's been at least 10 years of me being a solid fan of these books, rereading them far too many times.
So, of course, I was overjoyed when I heard J.K. Rowling was releasing a new book in the series. More magical adventures with the offspring I've the characters I adored more than anything. What could be more perfect?
Yeah, I really set myself up for some major disappointment.
I really was let down by this story and it still frustrates me when I hear people rave about it. I'm not one to try to make people feel bad for liking something that I don't. However, this book just makes me so upset and annoyed.
So I decided to rant about this book, which will either have a negative or positive response.
Now before I start, I will give a disclaimer. So here's you disclaimer about a disclaimer. I am not trying to upset anyone who likes this book or has any disagreeing opinions than me. Everyone has their own right to like what ever they want. These are just my own personal opinions that I wanted to share.
So here are the problems I had with Harry Potter and the Curse Child:

1) The format of the story
Now before everyone comes at me with pitchforks and torches, I have read plays before. I have no problem with reading plays. In fact, I've read my fair share and thoroughly enjoyed it.
My only problem with this story being written in the format of a play is that none of the other books are written that way. I'm used to vivid descriptions from the rest of the series that it just was kind of a let down. I just love the writing style of J.K. Rowling that it killed me that this book wasn't the same.
Now if this was supposed to be separate from the series, I wouldn't really have a problem with it. I think it's great that she's expanding her writing. I just don't think it fits with the style of the series.
There isn't a whole lot I have to rant about in regards to that. It was just a small thing that annoyed me, but it's not the biggest deal in the whole context of my opinion of this book.

2) Character "undevelopment"
This was probably one of my biggest issues with this book. I know the original characters are grown up by this point, but they still seem so different. They're so different that it doesn't feel like you can even recognize the characters at this point.
Alright, spoilers ahead.
Why would Voldemort ended getting together with Bellatrix? He finds no one good enough for him or even attractive. The fact that they have a child together is just so bizarre, even if that child was an accident.
Also Draco and Harry's friend/enemy relationship was just uncomfortable and weird. It drove me crazy to read.
Not to mention, Cedric being a Death Eater?
These characters felt so different from the original ones that it made the book feel awkward and so disconnected from the rest of the series. Maybe I'm just picky, but that really ruined the book for me.
However, I will say that I liked Ginny in this book. She seemed to be fairly consistent with her personality in the original books.

3) Plot overload
Again, I get that this is play and that a lot of lost time is trying to be explained, but there was so much crammed into this book for it being so short. I thought it jumped from events too quickly and there was too much going on.
Generally, I just wasn't a big fan of how this story was done. There just seemed to be a lot going on, but not an actual point the plot. Overall, it just didn't flow

4) Magical inconsistencies
A lot has changed in the magical world from the original series and this book. Like for example, time turners suddenly work very differently. There's suddenly alternative realities with different people instead of the same person living in alternate times all at once. That just really bothered me.
There's really nothing more to be said about that.
There were other things that bothered me about this story too, but I actually don't enjoy slamming this particular series and I still enjoy the series. I just don't consider this book to be a part of it.
I know it was partly my fault for getting to excited and hyped up for this book. Maybe one day I'll see the play and decide I like it after all. However, for now, I'm perfectly content with just ignoring this book in general.
Thanks for reading! Please check out my other posts and I will be posting again soon. Stay reading!
