Greetings booknerds!
Today I'm going to be unpopular and share some controversial literary opinions with the Unpopular Book Tag, which was started by The Book Archer.
Before I start, I will give a disclaimer: I am not trying to offend anyone. If your opinions differ from mine, that's totally fine! I don't want to attack you or make you feel bad for liking or not liking different things than me. Reading is so cool because there is such a variety things that a variety of people like. What fun would it be without that? Once again, I will reiterate, I am NOT trying to offend anyone.
Now, let's jump into it!
1) What is a popular book or series that you don't like?
For this one I will have to go with the Beautiful Creatures series by Kami Gacia. I'm actually sad to say this because I wanted to love this series, but it just wasn't for me. I've actually never been able to finish the first book and I've tried to read it at least three times, but could never get myself to get all the way through.
I've heard so many people rave about this series and I understand the appeal, but it just isn't for me. The pace of the book was too slow for me. I ended getting bored a lot and I didn't really care for the main character Ethan. It just didn't click.
I did watch the movie and I thought it was good. The concept is definitely a cool one, but the writing just wasn't for me.
2) What is a popular book or series that everyone else seems to hate but you love?
A lot of people hate either the Divergent series or specifically Allegiant by Veronica Roth. I actually wasn't a big fan the first time I read the series because Tris kind of bugged me, but for some reason all of that changed and I love the series.
I understand the complaints about this book, but I personally enjoyed it. I liked seeing Tris and Caleb being able to repair their relationship as siblings. I also liked finding out more about Tris's mom's life. Four and Tris really had their best relationship phase in this book in my opinion (for the most part). Plus, I think David (I think that's his name) made the perfect antagonist. Not to mention the repairing of Four and his mother's relationship. Overall, although I always shed tears, I really enjoy this book and think it's a good conclusion to the series.
3) What is a love triangle in a book or series where the main character ended up with the person you did not want them to end up with?
Warning!
This contains spoilers for the Matched series by Ally Condie
I was so mad that Cassia ended up with Ky. I honestly found him to be a very overrated character, like most of the oversensitive silent rebels in 90% of YA books. I thought Xavier was such a sweet guy who cared so much for Cassia. Not to mention he was always there for her, even helping her be with Ky despite the fact that he was madly in love with her. I wanted them to end up together so badly and I was so disappointed that they didn't.
But at least Xavier got his happy ending.
4) What is a popular book genre that you hardly reach for?
I usually don't tend to read fantasy books in general. I really don't know why because I enjoy fantasy. I think it's because reading fantasy books requires a little more focus and world building, which I'm not usually in the mood for. However, I end up liking them most of the time and a lot of books on my TBR list are fantasy, so that might end up changing.
5) What is a popular or beloved character that you do not like?
I really never liked Margo Roth Spiegelman from Paper Towns by John Green (although I also have a lot of issues with that book). She just came off very unrealistic and very annoying to me. She seemed very selfish and cold, especially to Q, who adored her more than anything. It always annoyed me that Q and the others went through all the trouble to find her and she was so mad. She just abandoned her friends and family, but was annoyed that they wanted answers.
I understand that Margo was supposed to be out of Q's league and such, but it still really annoyed me. I just ended up disliking her more and more throughout the book. You can have female characters that are extremely flawed that are still likable like Alaska Young from Looking For Alaska (I adored her).
I just really dislike Margo.
6) Who is a popular author that you can't seem to get into?
I would have to say Marissa Meyer for this question. She wrote the Lunar Chronicles. Honestly, I've heard nothing, but good reviews about all of her books. However, her stories just really don't appeal to me. I'm not a big fan of fairy tale retelling and that type of story. Also, like I mentioned early, I don't read a lot of fantasy and she primarily writes YA fantasy books.
But I am considering give her books a chance since they are so beloved, so we will see what happens.
7) What is a popular book trope that you are tired of seeing?
Oh goodness, this could be a whole blog post in itself.
The one that's currently the most on my nerves out of all the tropes is the oversensitive, brooding bad boy. I am sooooo over these characters despite the fact that I am a bad boy lover myself. As much as I love the Jaces and Dracos and Dimitris of the book world, I'm getting sick of them because they are all basically the same character. Their mood swings annoy me to no end. Being a relatively moody person myself, I cannot put up with characters that are constantly switching between being content and angry for no real reason. Not to mention, there isn't really much of a variety between them. They're all basically the same.
You can have rougher character that's a little harder to figure out that won't give you whiplash from his moodiness or is essentially a jerk. Or, better yet, how about a nice guy? I know, how boring, but nice guys deserve to get the girl too! They shouldn't just be the guy in the love triangle with the Mr. Bad Boy, who ultimately ends up not getting the girl anyways.
There are a lot of tropes that are getting on my nerves, but this is probably the highest.
7) What is a popular book or series that you have no interest in reading?
I have never had an interest in reading The Giver by Lois Lowry. First of all, I really think dystopian books have been beat to death and I'm just really not in the mood to read any more of them. It just sounds like it contains similar dystopian stories I've already read before and I would rather read something more original. The story has just really never appealed to me and I don't think I will probably ever read it.
8) What is a movie or TV show adaption of a book or series that you like more than the book/s?
For this, I would have to say the Maze Runner series by James Dashner. First of all, I was never a huge fan of the series. The books are interesting enough, but I wasn't super into them to begin with. I also just had trouble adjust to their jarden and terms. I couldn't quite picture things or I would forget what they are.
I think the movies have a very nice pace and are very interesting. I just think they do better job communicating the story than the books do.
Well, that's it for the Unpopular Opinions Book tag! I had a lot of fun expressing these opinions and hope there are other people out there who agree with me.
Thanks for checking this out. I hope you have a good rest of your day and stay reading!
